Did you watch Channel 4’s programme last week (7th Feb) “How to Get Fit Fast?”
A very easy watch, with some interesting information.
Three key things I took from it were:
- Group exercise helps you to burn more calories, and increase endorphin levels more than if we exercise by ourselves. Working out in a group helps to keep us motivated, work a bit harder, & keep going for longer.
- We can do exercise and burn calories just by staying active in everyday tasks. Examples mentioned were: Washing the car (burns 84 calories), Taking the stairs (120 calories), and one of my favourites, Shopping (burns around 58 calories per session).
- HIIT (or high intensity interval training) is a great way to get fit. You can do it anywhere, and keep it short which means you can fit it into a busy week. They said it was particularly effective for people in 9-5 jobs, busy mums, those aged over 50, and people who are new to exercise.
If you want to give HIIT a try, a great place to start is Wednesday evening’s session 7.15pm @ Samuel Lucas School, Hitchin. We do 45 seconds of an exercise, rest for 15 seconds, and then repeat that interval with a range of simple cardio and strength exercises. You work at your own level and pace. A friendly and fun session, with a wide range of fitness levels & ages.
